Back in the 1960s, when teenage girls in America and England fantasized about romance with their favorite Beatle, Cynthia Powell Lennon held the position so many girls dreamed of — she was married to John.
The two shared a working-class background. They met in art school in 1957 and were married in 1962, just weeks before The Beatles recorded “Love Me Do.” But as The Beatles became a sensation, Cynthia had to pretend like she wasn’t married to John.
“If … the main man in the group, John, was found to be married, then it might take away from that particular success,” Cynthia told Fresh Air’s Terry Gross in 1985. “So I walked around pregnant for quite a long time, hiding it. I’d wear very big, blousy clothes. In fact, I was asked many times if I was John’s wife and I had to refuse and say, ‘No, no. I’m somebody else.’”
Cynthia Lennon died Wednesday of cancer. She was 75.

“During the very first interview that Banksy gave to The Guardian, another figure was present (“Steve,” Banksy’s agent). Another figure is always present, says Canadian media artist Chris Healey, who has maintained since 2010 that Banksy is a team of seven artists led by a woman—potentially the same woman with long blonde hair who appears in scenes depicting Banksy’s alleged studio inExit Through the Gift Shop. Although Healey won’t identify the direct source for his highly specific claim, it’s at least as believable as the suggestion that Banksy is and always has been a single man.
"Since there is so much misdirection and jamming of societal norms with Banksy’s work, as well as the oft-repeated claim no one notices Banksy, then it makes sense,” Healey tells me. “No one can find Banksy because they are looking for, or rather assuming, a man is Banksy.”“

And in order to make sure that the job was done properly and authentically, the director put Audrey’s personal hairdresser in the habit of a nun to do the cutting in the scene.
